Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Capital Report

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to perceive, recognise and understand emotions in yourself and in others. It’s the foundation for many other critical skills such as mental health, change tolerance, communication, relationships, accountability and resilience! Schools whose teachers have high EQ, demonstrate the best national results of children (Source: Ongoing Hay Group Research) which makes perfect sense since EQ can count for up to 58% of performance in all types of jobs! The good news is that unlike IQ, Emotional Intelligence can be assessed, measured and developed through our Emotional Capital Report and RPeM program.

Why is emotional intelligence so important?

We all know, it’s not always the smartest people who are the most successful or the most fulfilled in life. Intellectual ability or your intelligence quotient (IQ) isn’t enough on its own to achieve success in life, while your IQ can help you get into university, it’s your EQ that will help you manage the stress and emotions when facing exams, building relationships and developing resilience. IQ and EQ co-exist and are most effective when they are allowed to build off one another.

traditionally EQ is defined by four interlinked attributes

1. Self-management

The ability to control impulsive feelings and behaviours, manage your emotions, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and effectively adapt to the changing circumstances in your environment.

2. Self-awareness

The ability to recognise your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and subsequent behaviours and actions. You have greater levels of self knowing and self-confidence.

3. Social awareness

The ability to empathise by understanding the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people by being attentive to emotional cues

4. Relationship management

The ability to know how to develop and maintain healthy mutually beneficial relationships, communicating clearly, inspiring and influencing others.
